Does Coenzyme Q10 Relieve Statin Side Effects?

Submitted by PujariCenter on Tue, 11/01/2011 - 6:30pm

Q: Should I take CoQ10 to ease muscle pain that comes from taking my statin medication?

A: Let’s start by talking about your statin medication. These types of drugs work by stopping the production of cholesterol in your liver. This remedy for high cholesterol also obstructs the generation of CoQ10, which is also called coenzyme Q10. This is why some people experience muscle pain while taking a daily statin pill.

CoQ10 is a necessary vitamin-like compound found in the energy factories of our cells. This enzyme is like milk money: It helps create energy currency for our bodies. In other words, CoQ10 helps your muscles move well. There’s even a term for when your statin medication leads to muscle discomfort: statin myopathy. In layman’s terms, this means muscle weakness due to statin medication.
