Can You Be Damaging Your Heart with Vitamin D?

Submitted by PujariCenter on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 7:38pm

Q. Can taking a vitamin D supplement be bad for your heart?

A. The recent uproar over taking vitamin D supplements comes from a study reported in this MSNBC article [http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/45325473/ns/health-diet_and_nutrition/t/vitamin-d-warning-too-much-can-harm-your-heart/]. What’s at the heart of this matter? On November 16th, scientist Dr. Jared Bunch, director of electrophysiology research at the Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah, presented a paper that said too much vitamin D can more than double the risk of developing atrial fibrillation, which is a potentially dangerous heart condition associated with heart failure and stroke. In this study that followed 132,000 patients, those participants with the highest vitamin D levels (above 100ng/dl) were 2.5 times more likely to develop atrial fibrillation.

Does Elderberry Really Help To Prevent Colds?

Submitted by PujariCenter on Tue, 11/22/2011 - 9:53pm

Question: Besides getting my rest and exercise and eating well, what else can I do to prevent flu and colds?

Take some advice from Pliny the Elder, a Roman author, naturalist, and philosopher who also commanded the Roman navy and army. Pliny called elderberry the “medicine chest of the people.” In the 1600s, clusters of these black berries hung from doorways because people believed this fruit warded off evil spirits and the illness they brought with them. You can take elderberry to help prevent flu and colds.

Elderberries contain chemicals called anthocyanidins. These flavonoid pigments (yes, this is why elderberries are black) help balance your immune system. In laboratories, anthocyanidins prevent several strains of flu viruses, including the swine flu, from entering cells.

Help Blocked Arteries with Gingko

Submitted by PujariCenter on Tue, 11/15/2011 - 8:59pm

Question: I know Gingko is great for my memory, but can it also ease my leg pain from peripheral vascular disease?

It’s true: The leaves of the famous Gingko biloba tree do have more than one usage. If you suffer from peripheral vascular disease —also known as PVD or peripheral artery disease (PAD) — your arteries’ pathways are narrower and stiffer due to a build-up of cholesterol. This hardening of the arteries can cause a chest pain type of feeling in your legs as you walk. Simply put, your leg muscles have a difficult time receiving enough blood and oxygen. Luckily, Gingko leaves may ease this pain from walking.

Get Better Results From Your Flu Shot With Ginseng.

Submitted by PujariCenter on Tue, 11/08/2011 - 11:53pm

Question: I am going to get a flu shot this season. How can I boost my results?

One way a flu shot helps to protect your body is by boosting the number of antibodies in your blood. These antibodies kill viruses. Another way to increase the production of your blood’s antibodies is to take Panax ginseng, otherwise known as Chinese ginseng.

A well done study published in 1996 included 227 participants who received a flu shot. Some of the participants took 100 milligrams of ginseng panax for 12 weeks. The antibody count for people who took ginseng panax went up to 272 while the people who only received a flu shot had 171 units of antibodies in their blood. In other words, the immune cell activity of people taking ginseng panax was 2 times higher than the people who only had the flu shot. The people taking ginseng panax had 15 cases of the flu, while the people taking the placebo suffered 42 cases of the flu.

Does Coenzyme Q10 Relieve Statin Side Effects?

Submitted by PujariCenter on Tue, 11/01/2011 - 6:30pm

Q: Should I take CoQ10 to ease muscle pain that comes from taking my statin medication?

A: Let’s start by talking about your statin medication. These types of drugs work by stopping the production of cholesterol in your liver. This remedy for high cholesterol also obstructs the generation of CoQ10, which is also called coenzyme Q10. This is why some people experience muscle pain while taking a daily statin pill.

CoQ10 is a necessary vitamin-like compound found in the energy factories of our cells. This enzyme is like milk money: It helps create energy currency for our bodies. In other words, CoQ10 helps your muscles move well. There’s even a term for when your statin medication leads to muscle discomfort: statin myopathy. In layman’s terms, this means muscle weakness due to statin medication.

Coenzyme Q10 for Parkinson’s

Submitted by PujariCenter on Sat, 09/03/2011 - 2:23am

Q: I’ve heard about using Coenzyme Q10 for Parkinson’s disease. Is there any research on it? Does it help prevent disability?

A: Parkinson’s disease can be a challenging problem because so far, in western medicine, we have not found a treatment that prevents progression – only medications that treat the symptoms. Thus, the study I mention below is exciting because, even if it is preliminary, it is interesting to consider that there may be something we can do to prevent the progression of Parkinson’s, rather than just treating it symptomatically.

Ancient History or Modern Magic: Pomegranate for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention

Submitted by PujariCenter on Fri, 08/19/2011 - 2:35am

Question: I thought pomegranate juice was old news, but I keep seeing it on display at the supermarket. Why should I think about adding this drink to my grocery cart?

Answer: Pomegranate has been around so long that it was featured in the Eber’s Papyrus for its healing properties in approximately 1500 BC – so it is definitely old news.  In fact, it has been displayed throughout the ages on several royal and medical coats of arms. But what’s new is that it has been shown to actually help reverse blockage from cholesterol plaque in the arteries going to the heart and brain in several scientific studies – which is quite unusual for a plant based medicine.

Fish Oil for Depression

Submitted by PujariCenter on Tue, 08/02/2011 - 3:25am

Q: I read that taking fish oil might help depression. Is this true, and if so, how much should I take?

A: The research on fish oil for depression is controversial. Basically, some studies suggest that fish oil may help you get better results from your antidepressant – but taking fish oil has never been shown to be a substitution for taking your medication.

All of the studies showing good results for people suffering from depression used higher doses of fish oil. Taking a lower dose may not work. For example, one well done study published in European Neuropsychopharmacology in 2004 showed that when participants took 6.6 grams of fish oil in addition to their antidepressant medication, they improved more quickly. On the other hand, another study published in JAMA in 2009 found that 2.2 grams of fish oil did not make a difference.

The Bigger Picture on Probiotics

Submitted by PujariCenter on Sun, 07/24/2011 - 9:58pm

Q: What's the big deal about probiotics? Do they do anything besides just helping my digestion?

A: Some people think that the human intestine is just a passive “thing” that processes food. But it is actually an amazing ecological system. So many outside influences can disturb your digestive tract including stress, oral contraceptives, antibiotics, alcohol, drugs, and prescription medications such as steroids. When any one of these influences affects your intestine, it disturbs the ecology of your colon, which can then result not only in abdominal symptoms - like gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation and abdominal pain – but also have widespread effects on your whole system. This fact is astonishing for Western medicine because previously, the bacteria in our colons was just thought to “exist” without really having much direct benefit outside of the intestine.

Vitamin D

Submitted by PujariCenter on Fri, 07/08/2011 - 2:49pm

Seattle Times
Astrid Pujari, MD
Column: June 17, 2007

Q: I heard that vitamin D can help prevent cancer. I also heard people need more than just than the US RDA of 400 IU per day, and that it is common to have low levels. Is that true?

A: Tis’ the season to talk about vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin.

There are some studies suggesting that vitamin D may help prevent cancer. One of the most recent, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, found that men with higher blood levels of vitamin D were 17% less likely to develop cancer, 29% less likely to die from cancer, and 43% less likely to develop a cancer of the gastrointestinal tract (a.k.a. the gut). Prostate cancer has also been associated with vitamin D deficiency. Although it isn’t proven, there are some theories that vitamin D may help prevent the rapid growth of abnormal cells.
